PPractical course

LOCATIONS: RHS Wisley (Surrey), RHS Hyde Hall (Essex)

Take in the beautiful colours and fresh palette that spring brings on this one-day practical. Fill your frame with flora and learn how to best capture nature’s springtime showcase.

This one-day practical event runs for a brief window in the season (late April/early May) so you can make the most of the splendid colours and, whatever the weather throws at us, you’ll learn how to make the most of the available light and how to use ISO as your key exposure control when it matters.

You’ll learn about creating both close-ups and more general garden shots, and how shooting from different angles can add more drama and emphasis to your delicate spring subjects. Learning to look for the key compositional elements – texture, form, line, shape – is all important for strong spring shots.

Whilst we’ll be hoping for soft spring light for the day, you’ll learn to shoot whatever the weather and how to make best use of whatever available light you have. Find out too why shooting at different times of the day can have a huge effect on your end results.

RHS gardens are the perfect places for this course, and with subjects and colours aplenty at these venues, you’ll come away from the day not only with images to treasure, but the knowhow and settings you need to recreate the splendour of springtime on your own.

A word of warning – the flowers don’t come up to us, so be prepared to get on your knees and bend down to reach your subjects. This means you’ll need good flexibility and balance, and the stamina to last all day in warm conditions (we hope!).

For the ultimate learning experience, groups are kept small on this course. You be one of five EOS photographers (maximum) on the day. And, because we know the Canon EOS system inside out, you’ll be given relevant and tailored instruction on your EOS camera, whichever model you own.

– Capture spring colours to best effect
– Frame your shots for both detail and wider scenes
– Fill the frame with your current zoom lens
– Blur the background and make your subject pop
– Choose the settings you need for the best results
– Correct exposure errors by understanding what went wrong
– Utilise ambient lighting for optimal results

Your EOS camera (any model), a kit lens (e.g. 18-55mm, 18-135mm, 15-45mm) and a telephoto zoom lens (e.g. 55-250mm, 70-300mm or similar) as a minimum, plus a fully charged battery or two and memory cards.

Intermediate level and above; all Canon EOS camera models.

– Hands-on tuition
