Waterfall photography practical dayWaterfalls0001

Spend a day learning how to photograph water and waterfalls in the beautiful scenery of the Ingleton waterfalls trail in North Yorkshire.

This location allows us to photograph varied moving water sources and learn the techniques needed for success. You’ll also learn about exposure settings, how they combine, and how to control the contrast and exposure for stunning waterfall images.

 – The important camera settings for capturing water
 – What shutter speeds you need to freeze or blur the water
 – Using neutral density and polarising filters to reduce the ambient light
 – Framing that works well for waterfalls
 – Overcoming exposure problems
 – The right lenses and accessories
 – Using Live View to assess exposure and white balance
 – Shooting manually to overcome exposure problems

A sturdy tripod is essential. You will need your EOS camera with a standard kit lens fitted (e.g. 18-55mm, 18-135mm, 15-45mm).

A telephoto lens can be useful for this course, but bear in mind that there is nowhere to leave equipment and you'll need to be able to carry your kitbag yourself over some difficult terrain. We recommend a neutral density filter (not a graduated ND), ideally ND 8x (3 stops light reduction) to get the slow shutter speeds which produce the feathery effect. Good walking shoes/boots and waterproofs are essential too.

This is our most strenuous event, so you need good mobility and fitness to take part in this course. The paths are uneven and the rocky surfaces are slippery. We do take a minibus up to the top of the falls, which cuts out a lot of the uphill walk (the cost of this is included), then trace the waterfalls route back down to the starting point, covering up to five miles during the day.

Intermediate level and above; all Canon EOS camera models.

– Pre-course video tutorial
– Hands-on tuition
– Minibus to top of Falls walk

The maximum on this practical course is 8 photographers, meaning you get plenty of opportunities to have your questions answered and the tuition tailored to your camera.

Entry fees and refreshments are not included – course price is for tuition only.
