EOS for Beginners workshop

EOS beginners over shoulder The starting point for all Canon EOS owners – get to grips with the basics of photography and start taking more control of your EOS camera with this essential one-day workshop. It’s the perfect course if you’ve just got your first EOS DSLR camera – you're moving on from a smartphone, compact or film camera – or you aren’t getting the results you want and would benefit from a back-to-basics approach to improve your photography.

Ideal too if you have had your EOS camera for a while and you’re keen to move off the automated modes – Canon’s Basic Zone, including shooting modes such as Creative Auto, Green Square and PIC/scene modes. This course will show you how to override the camera's automation step-by-step and will build your confidence in taking control of the exposure settings.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

So that you can get to grips with some key terms and basic camera navigation, you’ll get access to a pre-course video tutorial before coming for the workshop
. This means you'll be up to speed and handling your camera more confidently before arriving, plus you'll be at the same starting point as your fellow classmates on the day.

LEARN IN THE CLASSROOM

Starting off in the classroom, talking about camera terminology and the exposure triangle, you’ll learn about the core principles of photography – we will introduce the three key elements of ISO, aperture and shutter speed, explain what each one controls and how they combine to form the exposure.

Building on the elements covered in your pre-course tutorial, you'll learn more about the information your camera is providing and how to interpret this information, including what you're being shown through the viewfinder.

To get you off the automated modes, you’ll learn about three of the Creative modes – Program (P), Av (Aperture priority) and Tv (Shutter priority) – and how using these modes can give you much greater control and access to more creative effects. As with all parts of the training course, the points will be reinforced with visual examples.

Improving your success rate is critical, so you will find out how to get your shots sharper by improving your camera holding, learning what speeds you need to use to avoid the effects of camera shake, understanding how the focusing system works on your camera and finding out how to overcome other common problems.

ETA courses 760DTIME TO PRACTISE

During the practical session in the afternoon, as part of the group we’ll carry out a series of short exercises using the Creative modes. We’ll also carry out some test shots to demonstrate how to change perspective using your zoom lens, how the direction and quality of light affects your subject and your images. You’ll also practise getting your shots sharp, as well as some basic compositional advice.

GET CAMERA CONFIDENT

At the end of the workshop you will have new-found confidence handling your EOS camera and, with a comprehensive handout to take away with you and the pre-course tutorial accessible after the workshop too, you’ll have both the skills and resources you need to take greater control of your photography.
